In this post, I’m going to talk about shopping in Japan and Tokyo: what souvenirs you can buy for yourself and your friends and relatives. I’ll also tell where you can buy clothes, cosmetics and electronics.
I would divide all purchases and souvenirs from Japan into 5 groups:
I won’t write about clothes in detail – there are a lot of shops. You will find luxury brands in the Ginza area. There are Chanel, and Louis Vuitton, and Mikimoto.
Look for affordable brands in the Shibuya area, and designer clothes in the same Sibuya and Harajuku (read also about Tokyo districts ).
Chocolates KitKat with unusual tastes are very popular in Japan: matcha tea, banana, and even sake.
Sake is a popular Japaniese drink. You can find such a jar in Family Mart stores, it is inexpensive and due to the fact that the jar is not glass, it weighs a little.
In Tokyo, sweets can be bought at numerous stores in the Akihabara area. In Osaka, Dotonbori Street is just a sweet paradise. Everything is bright, beautiful and unusual! If you go to one store, you can leave there only after an hour. But if you buy gifts for your friend there, be sure that the friend will be happy:)
Hello Kitty is also popular in Japan, therefore, you can buy sweets of this theme. The shops sell sweets in beautiful packaging and donut muffins in individual packages. .
On the island of Miyajima, you can buy cookies (or muffins) in the shape of a maple leaf. It is a symbol of the island. They make them right here
Inside these cookies are bean paste. But it is better to try it before buying to know whether you like it or not.
In the same place, in Miyajima, you can buy a KitKat with the taste of these cookies))). It seems to taste good)
For beer collectors – there is a brewery on the island. You can buy a can of beer, it looks beautiful!
And, of course, one of the most popular souvenirs is Japanese matcha tea (Matcha). It is a green powder. And it is not only drunk as tea, but also added in food – ice cream, cakes, main dishes, drinks …
Many girls bring Japanese cosmetics from Japan: shampoos, masks, creams. Here’s what they recommend:
- Creams by Obadi
- Cosmetics Habo Labo
- Elixir Cosmetics
- Liquid adhesives
- Drops for eyes from fatigue (ask at the pharmacy)
- Refreshing foot patches
I bought only a comb. In some countries it’s sold under the name Magestic, in Japan – S-Heart. In our online stores, the cost of such combs is 100-200 US dollars. In Japan, I bought for 50$ (crazy money for a comb, of course, men will not understand, but I’m a marketing victim, so now I use it and quite satisfied).
To find the combs is not as easy as it seems. If you also need this, go to the Tokyu Hands store, to the Cosmetics department. If there were no such combs in the first store, ask the consultants in which store of their network they are and go there)
Appliances and elecronics are one of the most popular purchases in Japan. Any technique. Naturally, you should not buy one that you cannot take out in your luggage. Many people buy photo and video equipment, phones.
On sale there is a technique made both in Japan and in other Asian countries. I need to say, Japanese equipment will be more expensive than Thai, Malaysian, Filipino.
I can tell by the example of cameras. A photocamera (made in Thailand) can be bought for 500$. Japanese prices start at 1000$. In addition, you can buy equipment that is made only for Japan. I’m talking about compact cameras.
Equipment can be bought at a good discount. First of all, it’s tax free. It is 8% or 10%. To get a tax discount, just show your passport with a valid tourist visa. The tax will be deducted from the cost.
In some stores, an additional 5% discount can be obtained by paying with a VISA card.
You can buy elecronics in the Akihabara area (Tokyo). It is considered an anime district and an electronics district. There are many shopping centers. And they are huge. Consultants are always ready to help, but more often than not, it will be “on the fingers”, since they are not very good with English)
In Kyoto, a huge shopping center, where you can buy equipment, as well as toys, stationery, etc. is located near the central train station, the building next to the Kyoto Tower. On google map, look for Yodobashi Camera Multimedia.
If you have children, toys are what you should buy in Tokyo. The choice is simply huge. They are sold in the same shopping center as the equipment, only on other floors. There are sooooo many toys there. From standard soft toys, dolls and cars, there are cutting-edge robotic toys, cars, etc.
Toys are sold in separate small shops, as well as in the departments of “anime”. Search in the same place – in Akihabara in Tokyo.
This is it. If you have something to add, leave your comments. Write what were you buy in Japan and where! Other readers will find this information useful!
Have a nice shopping in Japan!
