In preparation for the trip to Portugal, I read that near Porto there is a castle (palace) in which the hotel is now located. And I wanted to spend the night in a real castle for a very long time. I looked at the prices – reasonably acceptable (120 euros per night), it was decided – let’s go!
In this article I will share information about the hotel with you and show you my photos. The hotel occupies the building of the hunting palace of the last Portuguese kings, next to the palace there is a small “French” park, in the vicinity there are many abandoned chapels and a forest with viewing platforms. Many people come here just on an excursion, not stopping for the night. So it is also possible.
The Bussaco Palace Hotel is located in the Bussaco National Forest. Judging by the address, refers to the city of Luso (Luso). Exact address: Mata do Bussaco, 3050-261 Luso. The location of the hotel is shown on the map:
The distance to Porto is about 112 km, to Aveiro 50 km, to Lisbon 240 km.
The distance to Luzo by road is about 4 km, by foot – 2.5 km, to the station Luso-Bucaco about 5 km.
A few words about the city of Luzo. If you do not plan to have dinner at the hotel, you can find a cafe in this town, the town is very small, but there are several cafes there. True, in most of them they will look at you with curiosity (it seems that tourists are very rare there), there is a small supermarket in the city (if I’m not mistaken, we went to this one: Semedo Compras, address R. Emídio Navarro 116, 3050-224 Luso), prices are very low. You can buy drinks, bread, cookies, cheese, sausages, etc.
How to get to the hotel
Since we traveled by car ( rented in Valencia ), we traveled simply by navigator. Most of the guests were on the car. Parking is large enough, right in front of the castle.
If you have booked a room, then entry to the territory is free, just show your reservation (printed or on your smartphone), and when you check in show a hotel card.
If you are not going to spend the night at the hotel, but just came to see it, admission to the park is free, entry by car is 5 euros.
For those without a car, I will write information from the forums (I have not verified the information). You can get in the following ways:
- Train from Lisbon or Porto + taxi
By train, you need to get to Luso-Bucaco station 5 km from the hotel (Portuguese Railways website https://www.cp.pt/passageiros/en), travel time from Porto is about 1.5 hours. Next take a taxi. According to tourists, the counter is about 5 euros.
- Transdev Bus from Coimbra
From terminal 9 towards Coimbra-Viseu. The bus reaches the palace itself. Tickets to buy from the driver (price 3-4 euros), the journey takes about 50 minutes. It’s better to ask for the current schedule at the tourist office (the information on the Internet is in 2015, so I’ll even write an approximate schedule, suddenly everything has changed)
Example: Group tour in Coimbra and Bussaco in English (transport included)
Check in and room
Check in at the hotel from 15:00, we arrived about 16 hours (before that time we visited the Pena Palace in Sintra, Cape Cabo Roca and get to Bussaco). They make out very quickly; each guest is escorted to the room. As expected in a 5 * hotel, suitcases also help convey to the room.
As for the room, everything is as they say in numerous reviews: the room is quite small, old, sometimes it seems that the furniture remembers the very last Portuguese kings :))) The bathroom is large, the sanitary engineering is normal, there are cosmetic accessories. There are bathrobes and disposable slippers. In general, everything is fine. But, of course, a room is not something worth coming to this hotel for.
The interiors of the hotel are of great interest, I will not write about them, just see the photo:
In front of the palace there is a small French-style garden, it is clear that they are being watched.
Around – the forest. In the morning we went for a walk, but accidentally left the tourist path. The forest itself is no different from ours, the Ural. By the way, if you leave the hiking trails, it’s hard to go in ordinary sneakers. Yes, and with the rise it gets colder and colder. This view opens from one of the viewing platforms
We did not reach the second observation deck, because very cold.
Hotel amenities and meals
Free wi-fi (at the reception they said that wi-fi was only in the lobby, but I also caught a little in the room. Day and evening, the Internet works so-so – enjoy the interiors and nature :)).
Is breakfast included. Breakfast is good: slices, cheeses, hot dishes, juices, champagne, yogurts of our own production, various jams, goji berries, chia seeds (I see the last ones at the hotel for the first time), bread, pastries. You definitely won’t stay hungry.
You can have dinner in the hotel restaurant, the approximate price of the dish is from 15 euros appetizers, hot from 20 euros.
At the bar you can drink coffee (about 3 euros), beer (about 3 euros), cocktails (from 7 euros), there are elite wines of local production (1944-1984), the price is from 130 euros per bottle of 0.3 l, from 250 to 1000 euros per bottle 0.75.
In September 2018, our number was worth 120 euros. The average price is from 113 euros for a classic room, from 140 euros – an improved room, from 163 euros – a romantic package (superior room + breakfast in the room + chocolate fondue and champagne + chocolate truffles + preparing the bed for bed).
