Bari is real southern Italy for me. With the narrow streets of the old city, with linen drying on the balconies, with emotional Italians (which want to photo and photo), and aunts who make pasta right on the street. This city is also a port. And a place of pilgrimage. It is here that the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are stored. Why go to Bari for you – decide for yourself, and I tell you on points how to get, where to live and what to watch.
Bari – the capital of Puglia
Bari is the capital of the Puglia region, which is located on the “heelpiece”. From Bari it is convenient to travel around the region, or even go on a sea voyage to other countries. The port of Bari is connected with the ports of Croatia, Greece (including Corfu), Montenegro (Bar) and Albania.
There are few attractions in the city, but each of them is important. The main attraction is the church of St. Nicholas, where the relics of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker are transported to Bari from Mira (the territory of modern Turkey ).
One or two days is enough for Bari. The rest of the time you can devote to trips around the region, or simply include Bari in your itinerary of travel in Italy as an intermediate stop.
How to get to Bari .
Bari Airport (Italy): how to get from the airport to the city
Bari has an airport (Aeroporto di Palese Macchie), located about 9 km from the city center.
The official website is https://www.aeroportidipuglia.it/homepagebari, where you can see the online departure and arrival signs and find other necessary information.
You can get from Bari airport to the city by taxi or transfer, by bus, train. Or rent a car, if your plans include a trip to Puglia, or Italy.
Taxi to Bari from the airport can be taken on site or booked in advance online. The price when ordering online will be slightly higher, but the price will be fixed, and the destination address will be known to the driver in advance. Finding an honest taxi driver in Italy is not an easy task, but an English-speaking one is almost impossible. If you do a couple of circles around Bari (and, of course, pay for it) is not included in your plans, order an individual transfer from Bari airport. It will cost from 59 euros. You can order here , and read my transfer review here .
If you need to get from Bari Airport to the city by public transport, take the bus or train.
The most popular option is the Terravision bus, the fare costs 4 euros, it takes about half an hour to get to Bari Centrale (Bari train station). Ply every hour.
The second option is the Tempesta shuttles (http://www.autoservizitempesta.it), the price is also 4 euros, depart every hour.
Buses from Bari to the airport run in the same way, depart from the central station.
The third option is the train. The station is easy to find by signs. You can buy a train ticket at the station or online through the airport website (purchased online tickets are valid only on the day of purchase). The fare is 5 euros for August 2019). It takes about 20 minutes to get there, trains run from 5 a.m. to midnight at night, between trains from 20 minutes to an hour.
Car rental at Bari Airport
At the airport, there are all the popular international distributors, as well as local Italian offices. Reviews for all are different. It will be cheaper to rent from local distributors, but it is unclear whether you are lucky with the service or not. For example, there are a lot of negative reviews about Sicily by Car, and we rented a car in Florence , apart from the strange service, everything went well.
Car rental at Bari airport from this office (for example, Peugeot 2008 or an analogue, by car) will cost from 76 euros for 3 days. Deposit 800 euros, deductible 2200 euros.
Audi A3 from Locauto (higher rating) will cost about 166 euros for 3 days. Deposit 500 euros, deductible 1,500 euros.
If you still don’t quite understand what a deposit is and what is a franchise, and what documents are required for rent, read my detailed article

Where I book a car? I never leave this question “for later”, I reserve everything in advance. I love two services: rentalcars.com and autoeurope.com . These are not distributors, but through them you can choose a car that is suitable for the parameters and price, immediately comparing offers from many companies. When there is time, I compare prices with the price on the official rental site, but it has never been more expensive for rentalcars or autoeurope (they take in quantity, therefore, offer lower prices). But here it is necessary to compare prices and conditions on the two services indicated by me, sometimes they are very different.
The same option with Audi. The base price is slightly less, but there is still an option with a zero deductible for 138 euros.
How to get to Bari
Bari Airport accepts both national and international flights, including from Russia.
How to get to Bari from the cities of Italy: Rome, Venice, Rimini
If you did not rent a car in one of the Italian cities, then you will travel between cities by public transport. These are trains and buses. You can also consider flights, for example:
Rome – Bari, from 48 € ( how to get to Rome Airport )
Venice – Bari, from 58 € ( how to get to Venice Airport )
Milan (Bergamo) – Bari, from 40 € ( how to get to Milan Bergamo airport )
Trains can be viewed at trenitalia.com– this is the main railway carrier in Italy, and it’s more convenient to buy through omio.ru (you can not even print, just show the controller a QR code)
I also usually look for buses through omio, it immediately shows several options (you can compare the price, travel time, departure point, etc.)
Rome – Bari: how to get
In addition to the plane from Rome to Bari you will be taken by a train of trenitalia. A high-speed frecciargenta will cost from 36 € when buying at least a month (travel time 3 hours 45 minutes), a ticket for a regular train will cost 16 €, but travel 6 hours 30 minutes. An electronic train ticket can be bought through omio.ru, it is much easier than suffering with registration for training.
Bus Rome – Bari on the way 5-6 hours, a ticket will cost from 19 euros. Carrier Marozzi or flixbus (if on omix flixbus tickets are not displayed, you can search them through the official website ). I went to the flixbass in Italy several times, everything was ok, my review is here , there are also reviews from other travelers in the comments.
Rimini – Bari: how to get
Both trains and buses run from Rimini to Bari. Frecciabianca high-speed train on the way 4: 50-5: 50, ticket from 23 €.
There is only a night non-stop flight, but it takes 8 hours, the price is from 24 €.
Venice – Bari: how to get there
The distance from Venice to Bari is 820 km, of course, this distance is easiest to overcome by plane, moreover, the price is more than adequate (11 €).
High-speed train from Venice to Bari on the way 7.5 hours, price from 40 €, buses – only with a transfer. Flixbus from 30 €, travel time from 11.5 hours.
Best Bari Attractions
The main attractions of the city are the Cathedral of San Nicolas, a place of pilgrimage (the relics of St. Nicholas are stored here), the Cathedral of San Sabino, built in the 13th century and containing significant archaeological finds of the ancient and early Christian period and the Old Town, where, like many years ago, it boils life – restaurants, shops, grocery stores, trays with local orecchiette pasta.

Where to go from Bari
As I said, from Bari it is very convenient to visit other cities in the region. I have a large article in my blog about the TOP 7 cities of Puglia , everything is detailed there. In short, in Puglia I managed to see the cities:
Ostuni (a white city on a hill, very nice, somewhat reminiscent of Santorini , many tourists, cafes, souvenir shops);
Lecce (this is “southern Florence”, although for some reason I was more reminded of Palermo , not Florence; definitely, there is something to see, half a day must be highlighted);
Brindisi (a port city, but either we came to a siesta, or it is actually deserted and rather boring);
Alberobello (an unusual city from the UNESCO list with fabulous trullo houses; here I managed to not only walk, but also spend two nights in the real thrull, I told about my impressions here ).
Cities in which I have not been, but which seem interesting to me: Polignano a Mare (known worldwide for its restaurant in the rock) and Castellano Grotte (city of grottoes).
You can get everywhere both independently and with a guided tour.
Car rental in Bari
Car rental in Bari, in fact, is no different from car rental in another city in Italy, and Europe in general. Documents required: driver’s license, passport, credit card in the name of the main driver, voucher (if booked in advance)
Ideally, the spelling of the name on the credit card, in the passport and driver’s license must be the same. The case is rare, but in France they did not give me the car because of the difference in one letter in the passport and credit card. In Italy, this is easier, follow the link to read my review about booking a car in Florence and about the nonsense of Italians.
You can rent a car both at Bari Airport and in the city. Place of receipt can be specified immediately when searching for options. Here, for example, what it looks like when booking through autoeurope.com
The base price is from 28 euros for 3 days, something more decent, for example, Audi A3 on a machine from Alamo rental – from 119 euros for 3 days.
For terms of deposit and deductible, see Rate Details. If you still do not understand what a deductibe is and how it differs from a security deposit, I recommend reading my comprehensive article about car rental in Italy.
Toll roads in Italy cost about 7 euros per 100 km, you can calculate your budget in advance at autostrade.it. Gasoline (as of August 2019) – 1,577 (95), 1,646 (98), 1,463 (diesel).
This is the basic information you will need to plan an independent trip to Bari and Puglia. If you have questions or additions, you can leave them in the comments. If you liked the article, bookmark it and share it on social networks.
